Saturday evening, August 12
The day before we left Colorado Springs, Katherine (the Trail coordinator) invited the 14-day pilgrims to meet on GroupMe. The posts came fast and furious--jokes, questions, and concerns that added to the developing camaraderie. It evolved into meeting at the bar in the Morris Inn for a toast to mark our arrival and first face-to-face meetings.
Katherine did talk a little about some details of daily operating procedures. Turns out there will be a set time to accomplish each day's miles. I believe she said they will "close the course at 3:00." My fingernails dug into Jim's thigh under the table. Thinking ahead to some of the longer days, I truly doubt my ability to go the distance before they call time.
Although I met interesting people, shared good conversation and laughter, the dread tightened through me. Katherine tells us we'll all get there together as a team but that doesn't necessarily mean everyone will cover every mile. So I sit here now wondering, if it isn't about walking the walk, what is it about? Perhaps the answer will come in the doing.
Other bits from the day. Mary (our South Bend hostess) took us to shop for the items we didn't want to lug with us from Colorado Springs--epsom salts (they weigh a ton!), protein bars, insect repellant, etc. We had to borrow a backpack but it's all consumable stuff that will dwindle as we go along.
We met two of Mary's friends. Rose sounds just like me! Although her condition was the result of anesthesia during spinal surgery, the result and the methods to possibly recover her voice are the same. We were thrilled to hear each other.
Jim and I had a fantastic dinner at Legends on campus. The Legend's mac and cheese was excellent (they were able to make mine sans bleu cheese) and the flourless chocolate cake was one of the best I've had. As Jim said, "So flourless cake is basically fudge?" Yum! Thank goodness we split a piece. 😋
